Phenol I.P (Carbolic Acid) I.D.H 100 g

Carbolic acid, by Indian Drug House, more commonly called phenol, is a compound of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen is a clear liquid with a strong odour. It prevents the decomposition of albuminous fluids by bacteria, the fermentation of sugar by yeast, the conversion of starch into sugar, of albumen into peptones, and the decomposition of amygdalin with formation of hydrocyanic acid (Brunton). As ordinarily used in solutions its action upon low organisms is inhibitive rather than destructive, its safe solutions being only sufficient to prevent their development. Locally it is styptic, anaesthetic and superficially escharotic, coagulating the albumen of the part, and the blood also when outside the body. It is powerfully poisonous to the tissues, and when applied directly to muscle or nerve, it paralyzes them at once without previous stimulation. It is capable of affecting respiratory system and can cause respiratory paralysis. It is used in dilute solution as an antimicrobial, anesthetic, and antipruritic. Ingestion or absorption through the skin causes symptoms including colic, local irritation, corrosion, seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, shock, and respiratory arrest. Phenol should be properly labeled and stored to avoid accidental poisoning.
